General Description
Maslen Environmental, part of the JBA Group is seeking an experienced hydrogeologist to join and enhance the groundwater skills of our existing hydrogeology team at Saltaire.  The role requires excellent technical ability and some project management experience, with demonstrable expertise in hydrogeology, groundwater modelling, groundwater quality, and familiarity with the regulatory framework. The successful candidate will be expected to perform in a technical role with supervision, in addition to managing projects. Dependant upon the level of experience of the candidate, there will also be the opportunity to be involved in providing guidance and support to other team members and involvement in developing the business. The post will complement our existing team of MSc graduates and Technical Director.

Maslen Environmental is part of JBA Consulting’s Environment Division providing solutions to our clients’ many needs in the natural environment. The Division comprises a wide range of expertise including land managers, environmental scientists, analysts and engineers, with a key emphasis upon environmental issues, groundwater resources and wetlands.
 
Responsibilities/Accountabilities
The Senior Hydrogeologist’s post will be based at our Saltaire office located in the World Heritage village. Regular client meetings and site work around the UK will be required. 
 
Demonstrable expertise in the hydrogeological assessment of aquifers and groundwater processes, both in a design (site specific) and broad scale (catchment wide) context is required. You will have led or contributed to projects involving the assessment of environmental impact of a range of developments or plans, and in the management of groundwater and groundwater dependent ecosystems. A general knowledge of the Water Framework Directive, and skills that cover the whole range of the water cycle would be desirable. A working knowledge of surface water processes and hydrological analysis would also be an advantage. Knowledge of the application of GIS is also useful. The successful candidate will be required to:
 

  • Act as Project Manager, requiring excellent organizational skills, budget and resource management.
  • Work with other discipline teams on large, multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Undertake technical hydrogeology work including: data analysis, modelling and reporting, with some   site visits and field work, as required.
  • Dependant upon experience, review technical hydrogeology work undertaken by others.
  • With support from technical director level contribute to developing new business opportunities, so broadening the existing client-base and range of projects undertaken.  This will require some internal and external networking to promote the services offered.
  • Contribute to marketing initiatives, tenders and preparation of project proposals.
  • Dependant upon experience, act as a source of advice and guidance on hydrogeology matters.
  • Dependant upon experience, assist with the continued professional development of junior staff, acting as a coach and mentor where appropriate.

 
Person Specification
The successful candidate will have a first degree in a pertinent science-based field with a minimum of 3 years relevant professional experience. Candidates with more experience would also be welcome and could have a wider role. A Masters degree in hydrogeology is essential.
 
They will be both technically knowledgeable to a level sufficient to meet the job requirements and also be able to demonstrate fluency and consistency in verbal and written communication, in both technical and plain English writing styles, and have excellent interpersonal skills.   Because we work across the UK, a full driving licence is essential.
