I enjoy the challenge of working at the cutting edge in a company that feels like an extended family.

JBA Consulting has grown rapidly in the last ten years, gaining a reputation for technical excellence, innovation and high quality deliverables. We are seen as leaders in our field and our strong customer focus means that we enjoy a good rate of return with clients.

Since joining, my clients have included the Environment Agency, the Highways Agency, local authorities and private developers. We have several framework agreements but also win some technically challenging one-off projects. The work is highly varied, from the appraisal of national guidance documents, to high-level flood risk management strategies, to the detailed design of scour protection. As a Senior Engineer, I have a good mix of project management and technical work which means that there’s no risk of losing touch with my subject. My duties include preparing proposals, client liaison, planning and resource management, as well as hands-on engineering, analysis and reporting. That means I still get out on site occasionally.

One of the best aspects of JBA Consulting is the high degree of autonomy and the opportunity for creativity. Because a lot of our work is bespoke, innovation is encouraged and departure from established practice is the norm rather than the exception. In fact, sometimes we write the guidance or software for others.

There’s plenty of support too. The whole company works as a team and shares best practice and new ideas via a number of technical forums. Training and professional qualification are encouraged. During the build-up to my Institution of Civil Engineers Chartered Professional Review, we hosted a fortnightly written assignment group at our offices. The company is expanding and there are plenty of prospects for the future. I’ve just attended a team leader development course and hope to take over a team in the next six months.
