JBA is keen to invest in the ideas of its employees and to take risks on new ideas so that it can stay ahead of the game.
I joined JBA's Environmental Modelling Group in October 2003 after completing my PhD at the University of Leeds. During my PhD, my research focused largely on the study of fluid turbulence and the flow structures that develop around in stream structures such as bridge piers and river bedforms. This work involved the use of state of the art 3-dimensional flow measurement devices and advanced statistical analysis.
My first job at JBA was to recommend a new tidal flood warning scheme for Blyth in Northumbria. I have always found the concept that the moon and the sun can cause massive movements in the ocean fascinating; movements that sometimes, when coupled with sea surges, can cause devastating floods such as the ones that hit Britain in 1953. The Blyth project allowed me to learn more about tidal dynamics and sea surges and tweaked my interest in all things marine. Following from this work, JBA embraced my interest in the marine environment and allowed me to develop and apply expertise related to extreme sea levels, wave conditions, coastal sea defences and oceanographic modelling. I am now heading up a new group in JBA called Marine Science, an exciting opportunity that is sure to be a challenge for the future.
Although much of my work at JBA has focused on flood modelling, I have not forgotten my geomorphological roots. In 2005, I suggested that JBA should develop a new GIS-based software package called the Watershed Toolbox to analyse the geomorphological characteristics of entire catchments. Although the development of this software is on-going, major components are now complete and are changing the way that we carry out geomorphological and environmental assessments. The Watershed Toolbox is an exciting example of how new technology can improve our interpretation of classic problems, can increase the efficiency and consistency with which we do consultancy, and will ultimately lead to better value for money for our clients.
My experience at JBA so far has been both rewarding and challenging. I have been impressed with how JBA is keen to invest in the ideas of its employees and to takes risks on new ideas so that it can stay ahead of the game. This makes for an intellectually challenging and rewarding environment where motivated employees can make a real difference to the way modern consultancy is carried out.
