Tyne and Tide

Tyne & Tide

For Tyne and Tide David managed to persuade some of his old friends and colleagues to share their experience and enthusiasm for the River Tyne, which have been put together in a comprehensive one-stop-shop of information on the River Tyne.

It is customary for books on rivers to follow the thread of the river's course from source to mouth. However, the trouble with this approach is that, as Eric Newby remarks on the difficulty of writing about railways, "railways, like rivers, are difficult subjects for writers because they go on and on". Instead, the chapters in this book have been arranged topically rather than topographically in order to convey more clearly the attributes of the River Tyne and to take advantage of the variety of expertise represented by the contributors. Although the chapters broadly follow a sequence from the natural environment to the river as modified by man, there are many stops and regressions on the way; man's influence intrudes right from the first chapter on hydrology.
