Founded in the early 10th century by King Alfred, Wallingford is a historic market town steeped in history, the remains of the Saxon fortifications and a Norman castle can still be seen to this day. Wallingford held strategic importance as the only crossing point of the Thames for miles, evidence of a bridge over the river dates from 1141, and the great bridge currently crossing the Thames has 19 arches and is over nine hundred feet long. Today Wallingford is a thriving Market Town; the centre is a major conservation area with examples of churches and architecture dating back to the 14th century. The surrounding landscape, dominated by the River Thames and Chiltern Hills is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Wallingford has been regarded as a centre of UK Hydrological excellence since the location of the Institute of Hydrology (now the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology CEH) to the area in the 1970's. |
